Why historic preservation?

I believe the past can be a powerful teacher. The tangible reminders of those who came before us helps to connect us with their stories, struggles, and triumphs. Sustainability wise I also believe preservation can be a positive way to impact our planet. Repurposing structures and giving them new life brings character, value and history to our communities.

What do you mean by Retain, Reminisce, Revive?

Retain- I understand not every structure is worth saving, but in general I believe there is value in the historic built environment and that we should support incorporating these tangible connections to the past into our communities. Historic buildings often contain craftsmanship and materials that are not common today, and honoring the craft and reusing existing materials is a win-win in my book.

Reminisce- I love to look to the past for inspiration and hope to highlight more of what is inspiring me via my blog. I believe classical architecture is rooted in eternal principles which helps it transcend the time in which it was created. Classical design can be found across many cultures and I'm excited to explore more and share it with you.

Revive- I believe giving historic structures new life is at the root of preservation. The programmatic elements of a building may change over time, but honoring the integrity of a design can be achieved when done thoughtfully.

Retrospect Residence is a mouthful.

Right? But it represents a survey of the past built environment and that's what this is all about. Well, that plus some personal anecdotes peppered in because I can’t help myself. I love my life and the people I share it with.
